5Very FastApr 08, 2006
By Kent
This machine operates very quickly. Once a roll has been filled it is pushed out for the operator to close the roll and insert a new roll. The machine does request preformed wrappers. The machine did clog up a couple times when I dumped in all nickels but otherwise no clogging.

4I like it a lotDec 25, 2006
By K. Brooks "Tucker-Smith Technologies"
Just finished wrapping about $700 worth of assorted coins. Mostly pennies. The wife hoards coins which is a great idea. About 4 months ago she told me to put them in her bank account. I looked at the work involved. Couldn't even lift it. Had to roll the vase on its side to get the coins out. Like Scrooge McDuck said, "Work smarter not harder". So I searched for a coin sorter. Our credit union used to have one in the lobby but they disconnected it. Stated they had to repair it too often. Looked for a coin star but none in my neighborhood and couldn't find one. So decided had to buy one so surfed the internet. They were really expensive. Finally found one on sale that met my wallet. Churned out about $200 worth the first night. Took about 4 hours. Would have been faster if I would have sorted and cleaned the coins first. Should have been more careful buttons, bent coins, $1 coins and Kennedy half dollars got in the way. Had to wash my hands and some of the coins several times because of dirt and goo. Being lazy at first I grabbed hand fulls and dumped them in the hopper. Tried to be careful but still some junk coins got by. Tap the side and they fell free. But had to take it apart a few times because of damaged, dirty and wrong sized coins. Even when you are careful the wrong coins get by. Just turn the power off, unplug the cord, remove 3 screws and clear the jam. So this weekend processed about $500 worth. More careful so took a little longer. The sorter is fast, real fast. I believe the 312 coins a minute is true but make sure every thing is clean, the right size and not damaged. Faster then I liked at times. Found that if I tossed in several at a time worked best. Had more pennies than any other coin so when put in a handful the pennies were running over each other. Removed the preformed wrappers because of it. It was easier because sometimes the pennies jumped in the dimes tube because they were bumping into each other and couldn't get in the wrapper fast enough. This way I could check them before wrapping. Foreign coins can be a problem because of the odd sizes will cause jams or go down the wrong slot. In closing it was worth the cost. Just sort out the damaged, dirty and wrong size coins first. If you have more pennies than any other coin like I did toss in a few at a time so the slot won't be overwhelmed. When the penny tube was almost full I would slow down to prevent jamming because the coins would push each other. Don't try to put all the coins in at once and everything should work fine. Durable? Tougher than I thought it would be and I have several more tip jars to do. We'll see. I like it a lot.

3I like it, BUT.....May 16, 2010

I have been using this coin sorter-Counter-wrapper for a couple years now. I like it but it does have some flaws. First, My previous experiences which lead me to the Royal Sovereign product line was the BAD experiences with the sorters one purchases at places like wal-mart and Walgreens. Plain bad, do not waste you money on these. They are toys which runs on batteries. I have saved my coins for years and the first time I had to count my 600 dollars in coins it was done by hand. That was over twenty years ago and its sad (I am STILL on a mission). I vowed I would never do that again. So, foolishly I purchased the "toy" then another brand of "toy" After several years of "toys" which never failed to disappoint me I turned to looking for a better sorter, counter. Enter Royal Sovereign. I first purchased the two row fast count machine of theirs which I kept for two or three years and it was far better than the toys, but still failed to completely satisfy me. I gave it away and got the FS-4DA.

The FS-4DA I have had for two years now and I have ran I suppose $1000. in change through it on several occasions (these things you just do not use on a daily basis, perhaps once a year when You have saved enough coins to make it worth your while. For the price I think its to flimsy, and a little cheaply made. If you baby it, it will last, however, if you man handle it or are careless with it I believe you will break it. For the Price I hoped for something better. The FS-4DA is hand over fists better than the two row sorter by the same company however.

Its biggest advantage which works well, is that it has four sorting tubes each (quarters, nickles, pennies and dimes) and as the first of each tube fills up, it stops momentarily and advances the filled tubes forward until the empty tube falls into place and starts up again. It continues this process until all four of one size coin tubes are full, then it stops allowing you to remove the coins and replace with empty tubes. This is a BIG time saver, and its the ONLY sorter I know of that has this advanced feature. Keeping you sorting longer and more productive, meaning you get the job done quicker.

As I have stated, I have used this machine for two years, and its two biggest flaws are this: 1) I have never used this machine a single time where somehow a coin did NOT mysteriously fall down into the inside and cause problems. Several times the coin will lodge into the "tracks" where the tube advancement takes place and creates a problem. If the tube can not be in the exact spot, the machine will not operate and if a coin is lodged into the track the tubes are misplaced ever so slightly that you may not notice it until the whole unit fails to function. At this point, you have many tube of coins in the machine, so what do you do? You have to unscrew three screws and take the cover off. Many reviewers here cover this problem but elude to it as "not being a problem" TRUST ME, IT IS. Royal Sovereign did not design this machine for the cover to be removed. It is a hassle, and if your sorter is full of coins, it is a BIG PROBLEM. Period. 2) Coins larger than a quarter, or foreign coins, well, they are stuck in there and at the very least start causing louder than usual noises, and at the most, jams up the machine. Yep, you can turn it over, and do the three step with it, but again, if your machine is full of coins when it happens.........hassles, and problems. 3) Even though you can put pre-formed wrappers in the tubes, trust me again, that will cause you problems also. Leave the wrappers off, and slide them into the tubes after they are full. Works MUCH better and at least the tubes till not clog up (they WILL with the wrappers in them (never fails to do so at some point)

In conclusion, This machine is head over hills BETTER than the "battery operated toys" at Walmart and Walgreens, but is not meant for business use where hundreds of coins are going to be sorted. A machine costing this much should NEVER allow a coin to fall down into its housing, unless it can easily be lifted off and be solved within like a minute. This machine's cover was NEVER MEANT to be taken off, hence the three screws. It is not hinged and easily accessible. Not being able to free larger coins is another big draw back.

This machine is GREAT for a casual use of perhaps dozens of coins on a regular basis (but so are the toys, and THEY are cheaper) but hundreds of coins at a time and you will increase your chances for a headache. especially when you realize you paid over a hundred dollars for the thing. I still use this, but have just purchased an even more expensive unit...the Cassida C100, which now that I know more about sorters, appears to me more of a robust and well designed machine. We shall see, next week when it comes in. For years I have been looking for a cheaper home version of the type, and quality that banks use (but scaled and priced for the home use) and have failed miserably to find one. Hopefully the Cassida will be the machine I have searched for. I want a work horse, not a something I have to baby, and certainly one I have to take apart, or a machine that jams. The bank personnel do not have to worry about their machines, and I do not want to have to worry about my HOME machine either.

2JammupJun 05, 2007

Works fine as long as you NEVER put anything odd in it - no dollars, half dollars or foreign coins. It has to be dissassembled to clear the jam and will not operate with the top off. Very awkward. Also will not work with flat coin tubes.

5Model FS-4DA reviewApr 18, 2008
By B. R. Weernink
This coin sorter workes great. We sorted almost $200 worth of coins. No jams, smooth operation, coins went into wrappers with no problem (used pre formed wrappers as recommended), no coins went into the wrong wrapper. We loaded the coin bin with as many coins as it would hold and there were no operational issues. Overall, a high quality product.
